- The Aldus PageMaker Filter XTension from Quark allows documents created in
- PageMaker version 4.0 to be opened in QuarkXPress version 3.0.
-
- To install the XTension, copy it into your QuarkXPress folder. When you launch
- QuarkXPress, an additional command, Import PM Document, is displayed in the
- Utilities menu.
-
- Before you open a PageMaker document in QuarkXPress using the Aldus PageMaker
- Filter, we suggest that you first open the document in PageMaker as a copy of
- the original and save it using a different name (this reduces the complexity of
- the document). Then open QuarkXPress version 3.0. Choose Import PM Document
- (Utilities menu). A directory dialog box is displayed that you can use to
- locate and open the copied PageMaker document you just created. When you open a
- PageMaker document in QuarkXPress using the Aldus PageMaker Filter, the suffix
- ".QXP" is automatically added to the original document name. Choose the Save
- command (File menu) to save the newly created QuarkXPress document.
-
- Because of differences between the two programs, a QuarkXPress document created
- using the Aldus PageMaker Filter may vary slightly from the original PageMaker
- document. The list below identifies some of the discrepancies that result when
- you import a PageMaker document into QuarkXPress using the Aldus PageMaker
- Filter.
-
- This beta copy of Aldus PageMaker Filter is provided for testing purposes only.
- No guarantee of any kind is made regarding its fitness for any purpose other
- than testing. Not all features planned for the final version of the filter are
- implemented.
-
- Pasteboard. Because of differences between the pasteboard in PageMaker and
- QuarkXPress, all items on the PageMaker pasteboard are copied to the pasteboard
- of the master pages contained in the QuarkXPress document. (In QuarkXPress,
- items that are completely on a master page’s pasteboard are not placed on the
- pasteboard of corresponding document pages.)
-
- Text. All text is imported and all text links are maintained. A block of
- PageMaker text is converted into a QuarkXPress text box with the same width and
- height. Each PageMaker column is converted into a separate text box.
- Tracking, manual kerning, style sheets, and rotated text are not imported into
- the QuarkXPress document when you use the Aldus PageMaker Filter.
- Superscript-, Subscript-, or Small Caps-styled text use the QuarkXPress default
- values for these styles when imported. QuarkXPress default values for word and
- character spacing are used for all text.
- Indexing information is not imported.
-
- Lines. All lines are imported, including angle, width, style, and color.
- Complex lines created in PageMaker (that is, dotted lines and lines that
- consist of multiple lines) are converted to the QuarkXPress line styles that
- most closely resemble the PageMaker styles. Line widths and styles may change
- slightly.
-
- Pictures. All pictures that were placed in a PageMaker document using the Place
- command are imported into the QuarkXPress document, including their scaling and
- cropping. Pictures that were pasted into a PageMaker document from another
- application using the Paste command are not imported.
- Anchored boxes. Anchored boxes created in PageMaker are not imported into the
- QuarkXPress document. Place holders (such as a "%" or "$" character) will be
- used in their place.
-
- Frames. Some frames created in PageMaker are converted to the QuarkXPress frame
- style that most closely matches the original. For example, dashed and dotted
- frames for rectangles with rounded corners and for ovals created in PageMaker
- are drawn in QuarkXPress with solid frames. If you subsequently change the
- corner radius to zero in QuarkXPress, the frame is redrawn using the style that
- most closely resembles the original PageMaker style.
-
- Shapes. When you import a PageMaker document that contains geometric shapes
- created with PageMaker’s tools, the corresponding items in QuarkXPress are not
- filled with PageMaker-defined patterns. Frames and shaded fills for such shapes
- are included.
-
- Document and master pages. All PageMaker document pages and master pages are
- imported.
-
- Colors. All colors used in a PageMaker document are imported.
-
- Double-sided, non-facing pages. Double-sided, non-facing page documents created
- in PageMaker are implemented as right and left single-sided pages when imported
- into QuarkXPress. This is done by using a spread for each page and a separate
- right and left master for even and odd pages.
